1999 WOOL CHAMBER, Buttles Barn, Forest of Boland, Lancashire, UK
The work is made from dry stone, wood, netting and 300 fleeces. You enter a dry stone passageway from a door in the gable end. All is darkness. As your eyes become accustomed to the light, it appears that the entire barn is filled with wool up to the rafters and pressing in, on and through the wall.
The project was lottery funded and designed to draw attention to the plight of UK hill farmers and also make links with the artist Kurt Schwitters, whose last work was an installation in a Lake District barn.
Making 'Wool Chamber' set a precedent with the Wool Marketing Board to allow farmers to use and market their own wool. The wool used was bought straight off the sheeps' backs and used in the barn.
