1996 OKAWA VILLAGE PROJECT, Kochi Province, Shikoku Island, Japan.

Organised by the forest and water department of Kochi Prefectural Government in collaboration with Okawa Village Council and with support from the British Council. I spent one month together with the artist Eiji Okubo in the forest mountains around the Okawa Village watershed.
The brief was to make one small and one large work from materials to hand. Four works were made over the first two weeks as a way of familiarising myself with the place and its culture. During the last two weeks I made 'Cedar Log Sky Chamber' (see previous page for hyperlink).

STONE WHIRLPOOL
Made on a shingle 'beach' upstream on a mountain torrent, under a waterfall. The stones were meticulously rearranged into a spiralling vortex. The work lasted until the next spring typhoon washed it away.
